Au Revoir, Europe!

Well, I’ve been a bit quiet on the blog lately because I’ve been traveling. A lot. Between cutting off my internet in preparation to move back home and traipsing all over, blogging has kind of been put on the backburner. The past few weeks have had me traveling a bit in France, all over Germany, back to France, and up to England.

As I type this, I’m sitting in my hostel in London. My flight leaves tomorrow afternoon for the US, where I’ll start the whole visa process anew, albeit with a different country. It’s crazy and exciting to think about the year ahead in England, hopefully with more graduate study to come. But don’t worry! I’ll post more about my recent travels, but I will say that I managed to spend a few days in York and I really loved it. At this point, I’m ready to spend some time resting and relaxing stateside. It’ll be nice to not have to pay to wash my clothes or walk about a mile to the grocery store. I think a summer at home is just what I need to re-charge before an intense year doing my MA.

And with that… I’m off! See you in the US of A!

My Last Week

It’s a good thing that I’m not an overly emotional or sentimental person, because any normal and sane girl would have totally cried over all the love that I’ve gotten over the past week. Ever since Monday, I’ve been showered with cards, flowers, kisses, candies, hugs, and presents from my students. It’s been super sad to say “goodbye” to over 300 kiddos, especially when I’m not planning to return and teach in Chauny again.

And to add to my collection of sentimental things, I have a stack of the cutest cards ever, with the sweetest messages and well-wishes for my studies next year. It really surprised me how fast the year flew by. It seemed like just yesterday that I arrived in Chauny, brand new and stumbling over my French.

And while it’s true that all good things must come to an end, I find myself being thankful for this experience. I honestly loved my job, as frustrating as it could be at times. Even though I don’t plan on teaching children as a full-time career, this program definitely affirmed my desire to teach at a higher level. I’m so excited for my adventure in the UK next year, with all the change and excitement that it will bring.

But for the moment, my adventure in France isn’t over just yet. I’m visiting Germany next week, coming back to France for a weeklong English immersion program at a local Lycée, and popping over to the UK to visit London & York! I’ll be back in the US at the end of May, where I will dive headfirst into visa applications, funding formalities, and other sorts of fun things. It’ll be nice to be with my family for about 4 months before heading back to Europe. Good things to come!

Alphabet Song!

…the oddest (and funnest!) way to learn the alphabet in French. It definitely made me laugh, considering that learning the individual letters in French is somewhat of an unexpected challenge. It’s really hard when I have to spell out words for my kiddos every day. They don’t understand English alphabet sounds, especially considering that we have different tonal structures in our language. So it’s been up to me to get really proficient at pronouncing my letters in French. I’ve found that vowels and the letters j/g are the hardest part!

(P.S, the word “zed” that they keep repeating is actually the way the letter “z” is pronounced in French.)
